Matt’s Bar Field Report

September 20, 2007 – 8:54 pm

A crew of Jucy Lucy afficionados met up at Matt’s Bar earlier tonight for a quarterly Lucy event. Kirk and Anne have an ongoing tradition of dining on Jucy Lucy’s at Matt’s Bar on the spring and fall equinox and winter and summer solstice. I was luck enough to tag along for this legendary event.

Sam Adam’s Oktoberfest and Summit EPA were the pitchers of choice.

Kirk waited patiently for his Lucy:

Then Mike got dainty with his burger wrapper:

Kirk demonstrated the fry-poke technique where the burger is punctured at the top. I don’t fully understand the benefits of this technique and would like to hear more about it:

Tyler demonstrated a similar fry-poke technique:

I ordered fried onions on mine. Matt’s offers a few options. With or without onions. Fried or raw onions.

And a first time Jucy Lucy eater obviously enjoyed her experience:

That covers it. Thanks to Matt’s for another wonder Jucy Lucy experience.

Additional reporting on this Matt’s outing can be found on Kirk’s All Four Season’s blog.

  2. I have a question/suggestion. How easy would it be to get a records section going? Is it possible to poll each restaurant on this site for some records?

For example, as evidenced in the photo above, I was at Matt’s on Thursday night. As per usual, I had two Jucys. Two separate waitresses there have verified that the record for most Jucys eaten in one sitting was ten. If memory serves correctly, the same guy came back and beat is own record and it now stands at 11 or 12.

Matt’s style of ordering (a la carte) makes it easy to eat mass quantities, as opposed to a place like The Nook. Plus, I feel that there burger are a bit smaller. So each restaurant should have its own record, to account for subtle differences.

Second, I wonder if anyone has, or knows of, the longest streak of consecutive days where a Jucy Lucy was had as a meal. After eating at Matt’s, Kirk and I ate at Shamrock’s. I actually had the Matt Birk Burger, but Kirk had a Jucy. So Kirk has a two day streak going. I’m sure someone out there has a much much longer streak. Verifying the authenticity of such a streak is at the discretion of the webmaster, I guess.

But a Records section would be cool.

And as for me, I think it may br a week or so before I’m ready for another Jucy. I went to the Longfellow Grill today and had -GASP- a Cajun apple and chicken salad. I had never ordered a salad in a restaurant until today. I guess eating two Jucys and a double cheeseburger in two days will do that to you.

  3. Actually, Matt’s also offers pickles or no pickles. Personally, I hate pickles (esp. pickle juice)
